Hi Bikers!
Lexington is a great place for biking with kids.
Everyone who lives in Lexington is familiar with the Minuteman Commuter bike path. The bike is a converted railroad track that starts from Arlington, crosses the entire Lexington town from east to west and ends in the Bedford Depot. The bike path pretty much cannot be missed.
But, as the bike path is so famous, it is also very busy and not always very forgiving for kids. On nice sunny days, the bike path is actually quite dangerous for young kids who do not always stay in their lane.
The minuteman bike path can feel like a highway, with fully geared adult bikers zooming by at speeds of 20 miles per hour or more.
So, while the minuteman bike path is known, easy to find and famous it is not the best path Lexington has to offer. Lexington has several smaller bike paths that are shorter but much more quiet and are suitable for younger kids. You can also combine several bike paths with a few street crossing to create a new tour of Lexington.
You can find all bike paths in the town Lexington on this search page. We'll highlight a few of these bike paths below.
Lower Vine Brook Bike Path
The lower vine brook bike path goes from south to north and connects the lower vine brook reservation to the North street pits. The path is very quiet and goes parallel to the vine brook. A very beautiful ride.
Lincoln Park Bike Path
The Lincoln park bike path starts near the Lexington high school, goes south near the Lincoln park. It then passes through Bridge elementary school (there is a playground there) and ends at the Lexington Old Reservoir. You can enjoy a nice little picnic at Bridge school's park on the weekend or at the reservoir.
Battle Road Bike Path
For families with slightly older kids, the battle road bike path is a must do. A long path that connects from the west side of Lexington all the way to Concord center. You'll be passing riding through the historic path of the start of the American Revolution: "Raise the Alarm!!".
The path is mostly dirt but well packed and suitable for kids ages 5 and up. There are multiple parking spots along the bike path.
